Karveer Nagar Reading Temple, Kolhapur
This institution was established in the year 1850 by the then Political Superintendent of Kolhapur, Colonel H.L. Anderson. Saheb Majkur called a public meeting at the Sunday Wada and presented the purpose of establishing the institution and the benefits to be derived from it. Rs. 5000 was collected from the chieftains and wealthy citizens. Colonel Anderson had the idea of establishing a museum by attaching it to this institution and he had also made arrangements for it. At the time of establishment, the number of donors was 17 and the monthly income was Rs. 15. The number of books at first was 442. Before October 1867, there was a joint library of Europeans and citizens. This was near the Maruti temple in Somwar Peth. After the Europeans established their own independent library, on October 6, 1867, the donors and distinguished citizens of that time held a meeting and prepared some rules for the proper running of the library. In this year, the institution was brought to the Nagpurkar Wada. In 1869, a low-fee class was established for students. In 1870, the mansion of Faridbhai Bohri in Gujri was given to the institution on a ten-year lease for Rs. 2500. English and Marathi books were registered with the Director of Public Instruction for prizes.
